Knowledge is a resource that is strengthened and developed by being shared. That has been the mantra in the design of Linköping’s new education center and cultural gathering point. Therefore, it has been the goal of creating interfaces for different types of meetings between teachers, students and the public, where innovation is created, shared and communicated.
The knowledge base is flanked by an existing urban space, which, as the area is densified and developed, will completely change the character and significance of Linköping. Kunskabsberget connects to the different characteristics of the neighborhood and already established segments and directions, such as the city center, the park, the traffic flow and the existing residential area. The different qualities from the existing context form the new quarter both in scale and function. The neighborhood will be a study environment, but also a meeting place for Linköping citizens of different ages, which is clearly seen in the design of Kunskabsberget. The flexible design means that Kunskapsberget can also serve as a culture house for the neighborhood with space for major sporting events and conferences.
The main building opens with a welcoming atrium to Drottningtorget and Linköping center and stands as a lighthouse for education and creativity. Atrium stages the profiled cultural programs in the main building and creates a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration at the school. Educational forms are constantly changing, and the flexible design of Knowledge Mountain makes it possible to adapt the framework to new and future needs. By creating rational spaces distributed on the two wings of the building centered around the open atrium, they can change size and function without any major interference with the building structure. The large atrium functions as a large arrival and distribution area and ensures easy and clear access to the school’s different programs and zones.
Kunskabsberget’s outdoor environment is characterized by meeting places and integrated natural environments that complement the school’s profile. The many outdoor terraces invite informal meetings with alternative classrooms and social pockets. Central in the yard is the “Knowledge’s own”, which forms a visual center and creates spaces for self-study or lunch breaks under the tree. Along the inner facade of the school, the outdoor environment reflects the underlying function. The restaurant thus features an outdoor kitchen, sports hall,an outdoor gym and classrooms, outdoor areas for studying.
