The Future Sølund has an enormous potential as an urban generator which can add life and atmosphere to the area with its many citizens, staff and guests. This area will be buzzing with life and urban activity around the clock towards the waterfront and among the housing area meeting Ryesgade. The future Sølund is an open and architectural compositional area staging an attractive and exciting frame around the variety of activities and services.
The shape and architecture of the residential area triesto capture the essence of living in the Nørrebro area as well as the core aspects of life concerning urban living, light and view in addition a coherent humanitarian outlook and nature. We are looking to re-emphasize the structure of the classic danish city block’s common areas. This place in Nørrebro is well known for exactly this and by taking these steps will create a stepping stone into a contemporary building style showing the way for time to come.

“The new Sølund is a completely new way to incorporate a daycare center, involving the elder in the local community and the life of the city. Copenhagen is a city with room for diversity and dissimilarity, which is exactly what the new Sølund supports.” – Ninna Thomsen, Mayor of healthcare

“We are applying new standards for daycare housing, youth apartments, daycare center and senior housing communities. We want to do more than just that. Our ambitions is designing housing where generations can coexisting and thrive side by side”. – Vibeke Gravlund, project manager of KAB.

Generation Square

Sølund consists of three primary inner yards: Generation Square, Friend court and forest patch. By these areas are two primary urban areas in Ryes Passage and the shore edge, which is connected by a variety of houses at the outskirts of the area connecting the life of the houses to the city.

Generation Square will have a common area (multi-functional area, library, wellness, cafeteria, cafe, etc.) in the periphery of the area. This multipurpose area is very flexible, where people can sojourn throughout the square and use for a variety of activities – all this on a large conjoined stretched out urban space. The entire space is lit up by the reflection from the Generation Square, which is the pivot of the conjoined urban spaces. A multi-functional area, a cafe along with a day care center as well as a playground will complete the social puzzle of Sølund which will be topped off with the sea shore on the outskirt.

The central yard in Sølund is the largest of all the yards and is designed around the idea of a garden with a historical touch of the patriciervilla – in both size and style as well as the garden. The old Ginkgo tree, the tree of ladies, which is a historic icon for the area, dates back for centuries will also be preserved and a continue to be a part of the community. Generation Square is a large common space for everyone, where youths can meet elders and diversity mixes with the spontaneity that reflects the life in the heart of Sølund. The Square appears as a green opening combining all the houses into one harmonious symbiosis. Here there is a predisposed area for activities requiring larger space such as outdoor music, theater and dance recitals. The area can in addition be used to sojourn, observe and look around the garden as the seasons set their mark on nature and the life around it. The workshop on the main floor being offset compared to the rest of the buildings creates an integration between the house’s many activities and the potential for combining indoor and outdoor life.

The team’s suggestion is a declaration of love for Nørrebro’s bridge community and diversity. In the competition we had a wish to create the framework for a vigorous community between generations bursting of lushness and passion. Everyone else from the community can be included in the house bursting of life, and this in itself is a generous and very meaningful vision to be working with.” Flemming Rafn Thomsen and Ole Schrøder, Partners at Tredje Natur

The project has a huge potential as an urban public generator, exuding life and atmosphere from the people around – from the residents to the staff and visiting guests. These people will shape the life around the area around the clock – facing the lakes of Copenhagen as well as towards Ryesgade.” – Mads Mandrup Hansen and Lone Wiggers, partners in C.F. Møller.

StueplanFunktioner

Sølund will be seen as a part of the city. The facade of the building defines an open and living outer zone towards the city of inclusive and active environments. This area will be an addition to the vibrant shop district in Ravnsborggade and Ryesgade. At arrival from Ryesgade a reception is located along with a kiosk, small shops and barbers. By locating these on the rim of Sølund customers will be drawn into the local area.

The nursing home in Sølund is conjoined with the elder homes and daycare in the same building, and the youth apartments will be located in a separate building. This building will be like a central hub for the district and a dynamic link between the main path of entry and the new urban space towards Ryesgade. In the middle of the flexibility are two sections for each floor, which provides the opportunity for sharing knowledge and collegiate socializing amongst the different sections.

Gangnaboskab

The overwise traditional monotone hallways in elder homes have in our proposal a counterpoising shapes and a mixture of offset spaces creating niches and neighborly relations in the community. As an added feature the counterpoised spaces allow more daylight in the inner facades of the hallways. Each of these unique formed homes gives the residents an individual touch on their home. Having these variating common rooms and kitchens makes the everyday lifestyle more exciting.
This is a place where small individual breaks are encouraged and there are various opportunities for mingling amongst the residents. The housing branches within each section of the community is placed in one single floor and the hallways have several cross sections and large facades with windows and balconies pointing towards the city, the lakes and the yards. In selected areas there is a facade setback giving the elders the possibility for their daily exercise with a view of the yards.

COMMUNITY
We have discussed the concept of a community in many different ways. Common grounds around the city and nature. The community between generations and the common past – linguistic, cultural and socially. A community in the Copenhagen districts are residents that have been living there for the most of a lifetime. A community reflects the city’s large working class society. From the ground this community is shaped on close relations between neighbors and the city as a whole. Experiencing, creating, growing and living side by side. The essence of Copenhagen has evolved with time and even though it has changed over time, the spirit of the the City stands tall. Continuation of Copenhagens development is exactly what the team strives to accomplish. Sølund will through lushness and nuances make up a buildings that have a sense of comfort and vitality.

FacadeudtrykKantzoner

“The proposal is highlighted for its strong features with an architecturally admirable construction showcasing modern components naturally mixing with the landscape towards the inner city and the shoreside. The concept of a community of where generations interact amongst each other having a Square as the natural gathering spot is an example. Generation Square is very convincing by showcasing a place with people of all ages meet and draw in the life of the city to the elder home for the residents and visitors. It is an interesting and original idea shaping the urban space in the center of Sølund after a safer and more withdrawn area where it also on the other hand allows for a more public space for visitors as well as residence.” – Judges comments
