NY ISLANDS BRYGGE SKOLE_NY

AN URBAN MELTING POT FOR LEARNING & PLAY
New Islands Brygge School is located at the absolute most central location in the area – right in-between the harbor, the nature and the city. The school with its triangular shape, thus has a great potential to become a new interconnecting element for the area. A hybrid that even on a city level connects the city’s intimate urban spaces with the nature park Amager Fælled’s giant natural spaces. The architectural point of departure has been to create a distinctive school with an overall strong expression, while fulfilling functional requirements – a position between the functional “form follows function” and the clear icon tailored to the urban context.

The school is designed for 784 children and has a special focus on food and movement. By creating an educational framework where the theoretical education can be linked to a physical, sensual and experience-based learning, the school accommodates new learning forms and directions.

Our goal has been to contribute to the educational development of the children through an inclusive and eventful educational journey.

The large stairs that are cut out of the shape of the building invites the school’s users on a journey up over the building. The spiral staircase is designed as a three-dimensional play and learning landscape, where movement is an integrated and intuitive part of the many activities and options for stay provided. The staircase can also be used as an amphitheater stage, where it is possible to gather all school students for stage events or larger outdoor education events. For educational purposes, the stairs have the potential to become an integral part of the school’s educational setting – for example it can be used as a motor tool for teaching, combining learning and movement as well as outdoor learning in the open sky.

AN ACTIVATING ROOFTOP LANDSCAPE
The school’s rooftop terrace at the second floor ’The Rooftop Garden’ is placed with close connection to every class and teaching areas. The outdoor design of the rooftop garden is based on creating spaces for relaxation, playgrounds and educational spaces: Kitchen’s with gardens, that for example can be used in cooking classes, natural- and physical science with biology gardens and green houses, and associated workshop activities and facilities.
The upper rooftop, ‘The Sport Roof’, gives plenty of opportunities for physical movement. Here is offered to active the body at the running track, balance and challenge yourself at the parkour area or coordinate the body’s movement through tricks and play at the school’s ball cage.

THE HEART ROOM
The school is organized around the central and double-high-ceilinged dining hall ‘The Heart Room‘ that works as the school’s hub and ties all the school’s functions together. Here students will gather for both lunch hour, but also for groupwork, after an ended school day in study groups or for different activities.

Around the dining hall, the physical area, the musical area, the auditorium and the kitchens are placed to establish good internal connections, as well as active and narrative facades both internally and towards the city’s spaces.
