The proposal sets a whole new agenda for sustainable high-rises of the future. CPH Common House rethinks the traditions of the classic Copenhagen courtyard building and incorporates micro climate, resource use and recycling of materials into the overall architectural approach. It is an innovative and effective example of how to build high while contributing positively to the development of Copenhagen’s sustainable profile.

The proposal CPH Common House has been developed from an urban, architectural and landscape perspective, where the individual parts of the project enrich each other. Together they contribute to a strong and sustainable whole, where micro climate, resource use and recycling of materials are incorporated into an overall concept and construction. It was a desire to achieve added value both architecturally as well as economically, by including strategies for sustainability and upcycling from the very first sketch.A SUSTAINABLE RETHINKING OF THE COPENHAGEN COURTYARD BUILDING
Qualities from the traditional perimeter block are integrated, a green identity creates a close connection to the context and nearby common, the active courtyard and roof terraces provide meeting spaces for the community and with light coming in from both sides we have created healthy, attractive apartments.

17,577 TON OF WASTE UPCYCLED
The project uses upcycled materials to an unprecedented extent. Local recycling components will contribute to minimize CO2 emissions and generate a new resource-efficient building with a local identity. Element facades are made of recycled tiles and concrete with brick fractures, recycled window frames are used as wood paneling and recycled wood for flooring. And the recycling and processing of existing building materials open a whole new aesthetic. In total, the team behind the proposal recycles 17,577 tons of waste in CPH Common House, giving 1,174 tons of CO2 savings in the building phase alone.
BIO FACTOR INCREASED BY 5%By also creating green roof areas, a green a lush courtyard and edge zones, the landscape is integrated in the building. The site’s current bio factor will be increased by more than 5% with this new landscape.
The proposal shows how an urban high-rise even can improve the bio factor and create more biodiversity by enhancing and adding more grasses, plants, flowers, bushes and trees – flora already being present in the local area.
