We propose to make an inviting and vertical interpretation of Grønttorvets identity with green bay windows, lush balconies and private plant boxes. Our ambition with ‘Karnappen’ (meaning bay window in English) has been to create a combination of the best elements from the classic Copenhagen perimeter blocs and from towers that contribute positively to the city’s skyline. At the same time, we want to introduce a human scale in a high-rise typology, which otherwise often faces criticism for appearing too closed or by being designed without real consideration for its context, microclimate or neighbors.
The tower’s facades are therefore optimized in relation to the sun, daylight, wind as well as noise from the nearby railway. The balconies and bay windows are therefore placed where the wind and other conditions allow it. The residents can therefore enjoy the balconies in a good microclimate. All apartments, regardless of orientation, have large and beautiful bay windows, which make the tower an active player in the urban setting – whether you are inside looking out or at street level pointing out where you live. It create security, identity and ownership of the area.
About half of all properties in Copenhagen are more than 100 years old and represent elements of style and character that we want to build on. From the late national romanticism’s rustic and homogeneous facades of bricks in warm colors, over national funkis style with the simple, masonry facades, large glass sections and roof terraces, there are good examples of how balconies and bay windows can be an enriching and integrated part of a building’s expression. We want to contribute to the renewal of the existing city’s qualities by renewing and developing today’s buildings to create more value, more diversity and greater coherence with their history. The bay window does not only provide great quality for the dwellings, but furthermore builds on the features and traditions where bay windows as a façade element have had such a significant impact on many of the classic apartment properties in Copenhagen.
HISTORICAL CONNECTION
With its breakthroughs and horizontal features, the bay buttons will contribute to the variation, rhythm and division of the tower’s otherwise tall facades. In the interaction with the balconies, plant boxes and greenhouses at the top, ‘Karnappen’ will appear as a significant example of an empathic high-rise building that is green and lush all year round. In the plant boxes, there will be ulex, euonymus, lonicera and hakone grass, while the interior bay windows will have optimal growth conditions for the residents’ own plants.
