Hyllie is the story about how a city in short time was established on a bare field and how the development of it happened on the city’s own terms. Today, Hyllie is experienced as a fragmented city because of the existing and mono-functional enclaves, the monotonous building typology and the surrounding landscape all functioning as isolated elements. Hyllie is missing a holistic concept that reinforces the relations between the fragmented elements, with the ambition to create an adventurous, green and livable everyday life. We wish to suppress the fragmented city through a holistic concept, that incorporates the city’s many structures and the surrounding landscape in one structure, integrating the train tracks as an active component.
The purpose of the masterplan is to create a neighbourhood, that is developed from east but organised from west. Thereby Hyllie’s existing grid structure is united with the surrounding landscape. The neighbourhood’s grid structure is displaced because of the train tracks direction, which allows space for a recreational path. Simulations of the landscape’s natural conditions such as weather and wind conditions, have determined the structure of the masterplan, with the intention of creating the best and quality enriching spaces for the users. Furthermore, the simulations are used in the three-dimensional development of the neighborhood.
We have created the train tracks and the new walking bridge as a natural liaison to a close-connected city life. It is strengthened by the visible and recreational program of the terrain that stretches along the train tracks.
We wish to create a simple orientation, availability and activity in the neighbourhood. This is ensured by creating natural connections, that create spaces for intuitive movement. Everyday flow and connections within the masterplan is optimised by organising an easy connection through the area with room for public and green urban spaces that strengthens city life, communities and good neighbourliness.
We have developed the area with the ambition to include various functions, that establish and ensure life around the clock. The station house and the two other buildings, will include public functions at ground-floor. The station house will accommodate business and the two other houses will accommodate residentials. The inspiration behind the station house is based on the character of an old station house, that includes functions connected to traveler’s needs. The vulnerable road users are priority in the proposal. The level free access offers complete availability and close relation between the inside and outside. The proposal favours bicyclists with an easy infrastructure between an underground bicycle parking space with direct access to the platforms, the station house and the rest of the neighborhood.
The ambition for Hyllie’s new station square is to create the city’s new, central gathering space, that adds new values to the neighbourhood and meanwhile solve infrastructural challenges. Many directions cross at the station square, and this pattern of movement underlies the configuration of the three buildings and the square.
In our proposal, the nature makes up the frame and stage floor to the everyday city life. The meeting between the nature’s casual effect, the various terrain and the building’s geometry create high sensuous urban spaces, where nature’s processes are integrated. This meeting is reinforced as a pedagogical sensibility, that invites to reflect upon the good life and our acts in the world. The sensuous life must always be one of Hyllie’s qualities, both at the public station square and throughout the small urban spaces in the masterplan.
