TREDJE NATUR has together with C.F. Møller and Rambøll come up with a new holistic vision for a close sustainable Gustavsberg from the basis of the place’s original and forgotten nature.This vision is an ambitious prime example of a sustainable holistic plan which will make up the foundation for the city development of the harbor area as well as the central parts of Gustavsberg.

Tredje Natur, C.F. Møller and Rambøll have as off now completed a parallel project for Värmdö municipality in Gustavsberg, Sweden. The new master plan is built up on a row of key strategies, which through a parallel project, will create an opportunity and set its mark on Gustavsberg as an attractive destination for future residents as well as visitors.
Our vision is to “re-naturalize” the city center, create attractive and unique living conditions and the basis for a quality lifestyle. The center of Gustavsberg lies in a valley surrounded by four granite mountains and several protected ecosystems. The two iconic water areas, Färstaviken and Ösbyträsk, will be reestablished through a green, blue and social spine. This shapes a city where nature is at the doorstep and where you can experience nature on a daily basis.
“We understand that Gustavsberg respects the unique nature surrounding the city center and the new city center will be built along a green spine, where urban nature, rainwater and participatory design, will be combined into a new narrative for the city. The residents of Gustavsberg will thereby have a daily life where they are in close contact with nature, their community and the large recreational potentials available in the area.” – Flemming Rafn Thomsen, partner i Tredje Natur.
Gustavsberg has a long and strong building tradition and cultural history. The new center will complement the several existing unique buildings in the area, which have roots in the swedish functionalistic golden age. The team’s grip on this will create diversity and a close urban heart in the area.
The progress is based on an underlying pragmatic buildings orientation, that makes up the edge of the community, which respects the existing untouched nature of which today circles the center. This way the new Gustavsberg center can offer the new inhibitors exclusive access to the cultural activities of town and the nature’s rich recreational side..
The project’s location will be built on an area covering 300.000 m², which will be used for housing, shops, business and recreative activities. To ensure that the project will be spot on with the locals in the area Värmdö municipality, along with the teams, will hold a public hearing June 4th of this year.
The hearing helped to structurize the foundation of the development of Gustavsberg. Especially the political hearing, which took place June 6th.

It is fantastic to be able to present our ideas in front of the city’s citizens and politicians. In the future Värmdö municipality wants to convert Gustavsberg from a worn down area to a new sustainable center offering climate-smart housing in a comfortable environment close to nature. The assignment was to incorporate housing, business’, offices, kindergartens, community centers, elder housing and a new park in the city with exciting and interesting gathering places. At the same time there will be worked with a suggested project that joins the harbor area and the center along with the rest of Gustavsberg through a green pathway.
Among the 38 teams who requested to take on this project, Värmdö municipality chose 4 to make a proposal for how the harbor area and the central part of Gustavsberg should be formed in the years to come.
The result is the foundation for the more detailed upcoming project. The municipality will now set up a plan that will take place this fall.
