TREDJE NATUR has become an inspiration for New York City. Saint Kjelds Square in the Climate Neighborhood in Østerbro has gained international interest, and the firm will join the municipality of New York, the public service departments, foundations and interested collaborators in a week of dialog to discuss Tredje Natur’s approach to the Climate Neighborhood, Green Adaptation and Enghave Park in order to kickstart a transformation in the city.
Copenhagen is considered a frontrunner in sustainable urban development. In the Saint Kjelds Neighborhood, Tredje Natur created one of the world’s first neighborhoods which is able to manage large amounts of stormwater, while making the neighborhood more attractive to live in, via an ambitious vision for the site. New York is so enthusiastic about this approach, which they would like to copy and create a similar neighborhood in their own city.
“We are delighted to hear about this initiative. When we lay the foundation in the Climate Neighborhood for the competition in 2011 and the process with the municipality and the locals that followed, we of course hoped that the idea would take off. We are therefore very pleased to be travelling with businesses and municipal leaders that have gotten the neighborhood to where it is today as one of the world’s most visionary and energetic climate cities.”, says founding partners Ole Schrøder and Flemming Rafn Thomsen.
DANISH SOLUTIONS
The collaboration will begin with the Danish Industry in New York and the Danish Cleantech Hub will highlight how Danish approaches to climate adaptation and make New York more resilient in the face of climate change, while also improving the lives of the residents of New York. There is a three year collaboration agreement between the Copenhagen municipality and the New York Department of Environmental Protection.
“We are excited to welcome the municipality of Copenahagen and their partners to New York. This week will mark the beginning of a collaborative process with Copenhagen. Over the next three days, we will get to know one another, and I am sure we will have a long and productive process to development the Climate Neighborhood in New York.”, says DEP commissioner Emily Lloyd.
“Copenhagen, alongside several Danish businesses, built a large base of knowledge regarding climate adaptation. If other large cities want to learn from Copenhagen, we are very willing to share our knowledge. The interest New York expresses for the Danish approach to stormwater management can open doors for a danish knowledge export to other cities around the world.” according to Morten Kabell, Technical and Environmental Mayor of Copenhagen.
DANISH CLEANTECH HUB
Danish Cleantech Hub started in 2014 by Danish Industries and State of Green to start a dialog between decision makers in New York and to make green solutions from Denmark more visible in New York.
– “Over the next few days we look forward to see the Danish Cleantech Hub create a framework for a dialog between the private and public interest groups involved with climate adaptation and the exchange of ‘best practice’ methods from the Climate Neighborhood in Østerbro, so that they can be translated into a similar project in New York.” says Andrea Brunsgaard, director of DI’s American headquarters.
Danish Cleantech Hub has collaborated with the municipality of Copenhagen with climate adaptation matters and this is the basis for Danish Cleantech will collect representatives from New York and Copenhagen and several danish businesses that have been involved in the Climate Neighborhood in Østerbro. The Danish companies include: Tredje Natur, Rambølll, COWI, SLA, Henning Larsen Architects, Envidan, Orbicon, DHI, and NIRAS. As a follow up to the trip to New York there will be workshops in September 2016.
