WELCOME TO WOLF LAND!
When politicians, public officials, and the business world have failed to react to the new realities of the world, all eyes are turned on architects. Architects must reinvent themselves, step up in the food chain and take the place of visionary cattle the  world has been begging for. Welcome to Wolf Land!

Today, people are caught in extreme tension. This tension is created by the closely approaching climate apocalypse and an individual’s daily life. Lunch boxes must be packed, kids must be picked up and tending to work. The world is celebrating a new oil discovery in the North Sea, while climate change is compared to an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Shit stays together, while a hamburger is directly at fault for forest destruction in South America. The tension builds in a collective reaction, that comes from panic, an inability to act, they shout ‘the wolf is coming!’ even though he has only been seen in Thy. Let’s enjoy life while we can!

The film portrays the architects balancing act between daily life and the apocalypse, between the deadly reality of climate change and endless population growth. The architect must create the physical environment that express the challenges of the world and reality in a way that mobilizes recognition, reaction, willingness to change, and optimism. All this without losing a holistic perspective or an individual’s daily life. Architects must administer catastrophe therapy!

The balancing act between daily and the apocalyptic happens in unsentimental ways. Zooming in and out between the intimate daily life and a new map of Denmark. In a mash up of experts, the well intentioned architect and the untamed wolf, present the films utopic debate arenas, Damland, Energyland, Densityland. Everyone is straining to be the most  flashy – instead of being concerned about Denmark’s development.

Judge’s comments:
The premise of the competition is solved in a surprising and convincing manner in ‘Wolf Land’. Here we meet an architect in an open discussion with opinion creators, experts, politicians, and fellow architects, including a wolf, who ensures they take a critical stance. The storyboard is the submissions strength when compared to the rest of the submissions, which focus on the creation of the manifest and the synopsis. In ‘Wolf Land’ we are already introduces to the film’s tools, you are entertained, questioned, and educated. It is an open discussion that is this submissions spine and strength, it is here we understand the architect’s dilemma and the reality when the architect tries to solve issues such as density, rising sea levels and ghettoization. ‘Wolf Land’ succeeds in describing the role of the architect as a problem solver for a number of large societal issues through an honest and interesting expression and therefore fill the competitions program’s most important intention perfectly.

CAN WE DESIGN NEW LAND ?
Among 76 submitted suggestions TREDJE NATUR won the arts fund’s open film competition ‘can we draw a new Land?’. The recently resigned chairman of the Arts fund of the State’s architecture selection Lars Juel Thiis says about the  film competition:

‘Denmark is physically changing radically and this will lead to changing in how we develop and experience our cities and landscapes. Changes including climate change, population decline in rural areas, migration to urban centers and the new infrastructural corridors. These changes call for new thinking, willingness to act, and political courage. With this competition we want to show how architectural thinking can contribute to the solutions to Denmark’s future challenges and thereby inspiration for the future architecture policy.’

Thirteen experts have written essays for the competition program commenting on the change Denmark is about to experience including: Tor Nørretranders, Rune Lykkeberg, Carsten Thau, and Jens Kvorning. Read konkurrenceprogrammet. (In Danish)

MANIFEST

1. I always want to make a fucking manifest for architecture!
Architecture should be understandable for the body and the soul via tangible things.

2. I will always speak in a way so that both children and politician understand!
Without a dialog I fuck up architecture and fuck up the whole profession.

3. I will always allow architecture to honor daily life!
Architecture is about creating a meaningful framework for a fantastic daily life.

4. I will never speak of ‘ugly’ or ‘beautiful’!
Architecture is not about what it fucking looks like, but what it fucking does.

5. I will never reduce architecture to design objects!
Architecture is about the latent social relationships in society. Nothing else!

6. I will always create educational landscapes!
The things which we fucking feel, we fucking remember. Global change is created and strengthened in the intimate, everyday experiences.

7. I will never again just solve one problem at a time!
The world is complex and requires hybrid solutions, that fucking connect them rather than fucking separating them.

8. I will never again solve everything at once!
Architecture is a fucking process. City’s avoid planning. I am never fucking smart enough.

9. I will always be overconfident!
All systems are designed to work against change. Expect to be fucking challenged.

10. My architecture must be excellent!!
Solutions are found in thinking that happens between the everyday and the apocalypse and if it’s not fucking fun to go to work, then I am doing it wrong.

I also promise that as an architect, I will not hang my head when I am in deep shit. My ultimate goal in life is to create empathy for humankind, by clarifying the individual’s connection to everything in the world.
