COPENHAGEN’S RECREATIVE WATER CULTURE HOUSE
Our vision for the Water Culture House was to create a human-scale and sensuous house, that makes the water available for everybody. The Water Culture House can be characterized as a changeable house, by being highly specialized, but at the same time also offer a flexible frame for other cultural activities. It offers space for everyday activities with unique and distinctive experiences – all with water as the main element.

The site of the Water Culture House on Christiansholm is one of the most central, historic and urban places in the harbor of Copenhagen, which enables a significant addition to Copenhagen’s public spaces and culture offerings. The proposal is made to integrate and add a new destination to the harbor, that expresses the city’s determined will to generate environments that promote a humane and sustainable everyday life.

Furthermore it answers the city’s densification and adaptation to become a more compact welfare city. The Water Culture House aims to lead the way for the future’s welfare urbanization, and with multiple water and culture experiences contributes to the activities and life on Christiansholm.

The Water Culture House adapts to the design of the masterplan proposal for Christiansholm – a hybrid structure combining the existing paperhalls’ large size and the roof profiles from the harbor’s characteristic old warehouses. It will appear as a characteristic house at the harbor, where volume and scale adapt to the masterplan’s existing buildings, but adds a sensuous, adventurous and human-scale dimension to it.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE WATER CULTURE HOUSE
The Water Culture House is formed as a simple, strict and rectangle building. A simple expression corresponding to the masterplan’s strict and rectangle geometry. To both achieve a close relation and views to the outer urban space and create an adventurous, surprising and innovative architecture, the “legs” of the building are rotated to make space for big corner windows on the building. The rectangle plan integrates a diagonal ‘X’, to establish a visual connection and close relation between the inside and outside, with double-sided views.

The connection creates harmony between the Water Culture House’s activities, the four corners of the world and the harbor’s culture offerings – such as the harbor side, the public flow at Proviantmagasin graven, the Opera House, life inside Christiansholm, the bridge Inderhavnsbroen and Slotsholmen.

The central room of the Water Culture House is underlined by an atrium, from ground floor to the roof. From the roof a window will secure daylight to create a bright, friendly and inviting environment. It generates a coherent and elevated atmosphere. To make room for varies functions and activities the Water Culture House is horizontally divided in three primary levels – the terrain, the sky and the oasis.

VANDKULTURHUS4VANDKULTURHUS_DIAGRAM2

THE TERRAIN
The Water Culture House’s main pools are located at the ground floor with a direct visual connection to the city and the harbor. By placing the four ”legs” at the sides of the building and the windows in the corners, the terrain level is divided into five key areas; four corners with view to the city and one large room in the middle, where the large exercise pool is located. This pool is surrounded by a hot water pool, a pool for educational purposes and a pool to play in – all with magnificent views over the city.

THE SKY
The building’s middle level, the sky, consists of bounded functions, such as fitness, wellness, ice bath, sauna, union’s facilities, staff room and offices.

The sky ties the building and the different levels together, by lacing itself around the roof window through a circular balcony. It creates a visual connection between the top floor, oasis, and the ground floor, terrain.

THE OASIS
At the top floor the oasis is located, where the Water Culture House’s tropical therapy garden and educational room is located. It creates possibilities to bring blue and green sensuous experiences into humans’ everyday life all year. The atmosphere is intimate, botanic and urban, filled with plants and a unique view over the city, the harbor and the ground floor, the terrain. Here are wellness areas, rehabilitation facilities, hot water pool, a public café and herb garden available for all visitors.

THE SENSUOUS EXPERIENCES
Our proposal for the new Water Culture House aims to create attractive activities and unique sensuous experiences, with water as the main element. Experiences with water in the city, operates between cold and warm, airy and saturated, up and down, intimate and public, artificial and natural. The ambition of the proposal is to portray how the Water Culture House relates to these contrasts and how it supports new types of water experiences in urban spaces. The water is used in a wide range of expressions to create places and rooms, where senses and impressions can run free.

The water will appear in the forms of haze, fog and mist, water drops, hefty and light rains, reflection pools, different levels of water, to support the different water activities’ character and atmospheres. By the Harbor, a Water spring park is established and by the pools in the terrain level variations of rain pours. Both situations promote movement and activities. By the wellness and spa areas water acts as haze and fog, which promote rest and relaxation. The water is used to create atmosphere that affect humans state of mind.
