RED GATE

RED GATE

Tredje Natur has designed two pedestrian bridges to Vestvolden. The bridges will connect the recreational area across Jyllingevej and Vestbanen, and contain a variety of experiences. Based on the historic fortifications, the new bridges will create new layers of meaning and connection. The proposal for the bridge at Vestbanen received second place in the competition.

THE GATE
For the many thousands of the people passing by Jyllingevej on a daily basis, the bridge is subtle a addition. With its bowed form and the warm color palette created by the steel, the bridge tells the story of Vestvolden. At night, the bridge will light up from underneath and will be illuminated with a warm, orange glow, which can be seen from a kilometer away on both sides by the traffic to and from Copenhagen. There are western and eastern traditions for highlighting transitions with a red color. The japanese torii highlights the transition from the mundane to the holy. This proposal therefore marks the entrance to Copenhagen and establishes Vestvolden as a part of the mental image of the passer by’s consciousness.

BACKGROUND
Vestvolden was built in 1868-1893 and was a result of the war of 1864. It is an example of Denmark’s military history, a both technically and laboriously almost inconceivable project of its time. Vestvolden is a 14,5 kilometer long arch, that goes from Avedøre to Utterslev marsh, built to protect Copenhagen from attacks from the west. It was built with shovels, wheelbarrows and manual labor and the architectural principles of the danish military of the time. Vestervolden is a historically preserved landmark, full of anecdotes and textural layers between forgotten and hidden buildings. It is also in the middle of a wild nature area that gives visitors an idea of the places historic meaning and story.

Originally, Vestvolden’s purpose was to protect Copenhagen and create a buffer between the city and its enemies. Today, it is used very differently. Vestvolden is a historic, recreational, nature area that connects an urban area, thereby weaving the past into the present. Vestervolden shows its history and wild nature in its long form, with many types of spatial experiences. Vestervolden can be interpreted as a horizontal cathedral. In a conversation with these unique places the team has created a story about the new connections.

PLACES AND PATTERNS
On certain points on the bridges double-sided steel beams, where the city’s historic buildings and structures will be shown in the holes in the steel. The context thereby creates an impact on the bridge and creates a poetic Moiré pattern when the user moves over the bridge.  The pattern reminds the user of the many structures and textures, while giving a subtle effect that the beams and bridge are floating.

The unique qualities of the space are emphasized in the steel information signs and QR codes, that show digital information about the the many stories of Vestervolden. Some places along the bridge creates small pockets, allowing for pauses along the bridge. User’s can take a break from running or reflect on the view over the treetops.

THE BRIDGES
We aim to create a continuous bridge structure, that facilitates a historical experience and nature’s sensory materiality in a spatial synthesis. The bridges are mostly constructed in steel – a material that is prominent on this site and which reacts to changes in the weather and context. As time passes, the steel will rust in a controlled process and the bridge will develop a warm glow based on the materiality of the area. The structure creates place, changeability, education and thereby creates a quiet dialogue with the context. The expression is simple.

LIGHTNESS AND WEIGHT
Vestvolden has a long tradition of bridges. Many of the original bridges are elegant and impressive in their craft and engineering, while still being light and unadorned. Our proposal for the new bridges, aims to highlight the weight and scale of the place in a visually heavy construction which, by way of columns, lightly lands on the ground. The columns ‘tread’ lightly on the ground and are the most narrow vertical element, along with the many tree trunks around the bridge. The columns rhythm, give an offbeat to the two by two alle trees along the bridge and the path.
