NEW SPORTS HALL AT GREVE GYMNASIUM

Gårdrummet og hallen

TREDJE NATUR’s proposal for the new sports hall at Greve gymnasium is a multifunctional area. The idea is to invite the users into a place of many types of activities – from spontaneous or semi-organised events to organised sports. The sports hall will provide a better opportunity for the rise of new communities, that can inspire more activities qua the building opens up towards the surroundings. The openness will be one of the factors for creating spaces. Spaces for temporary stays, spaces for contemplation and spaces for enthusiasm.

Vision
Greve gymnasium is a local ambitious institution. The academic standards are high and their vision is learning through academic communities and education – both inside as well as outside of the classroom. There will be great focus on a wide arrange of alternative ways to do so, such as interdisciplinary activities and collaborations, which are the central elements for the school’s philosophy for learning.

The vision of this new sports hall will be an extension of this principle. The goal is to create a remarkable place with large spaces and architectural qualities that meets a variety of the functional demands.

Here will occur a beautiful symbiose between new and old, play and learning. The joining of the contrasts will connect with ease in a coherent and exciting environment for educational purposes and activities.

The new sports hall will have to be in contrast to the existing building’s style. At the same time the sports hall has to set apart from the existing buildings physiognomy, as well as being able to stand alone as a solitary building. Our vision is to create a structure, which is sustainable in all measures – while under construction and in the future maintenance.

Siteplan

Koncept

Concept
The sports hall is placed close to the gymnasium. The reason for this is to achieve a close relation to the social rooms of the gymnasium, corridors, current sports hall areas and canteens, which will create the best synergy with the outdoor life around the gymnasium. The inspiration for the layout comes from the current common areas with informal places to meet up. The additional building will amplify these areas and work as a direct connection between new and old.

In the area between the gymnasium and the new sports hall a small there will be a new courtyard surrounded by two indoor wings with different sports hall functions. The courtyard in the middle will create life from the surroundings, like a path adds life and opens up for the school area. The courtyard will act as an open oasis, where people can enjoy their lunch, work or just take a small break.

The new extension to the existing building is tailor fitted to the current buildings in a natural way, and the wings will play a great part in the connection between new and old. The social life focused around the axis of the area will automatically go from the library and canteen to the sports hall through the courtyard and the wings. Furthermore the flow extends from the sports hall out towards the outdoor sports area through the four large window openings, which is one of the sports hall’s significant architectural features.

The infrastructure of the sports hall is connected to the existing hallways and corridors of the gymnasium forming a natural flow between the two. The sports hall is placed close to the library, where there will be great connections. This strengthens the collected areas dynamic and flexibility, where there is space for informal learning in large areas.

The structure
The transverse beams across the sports hall are in structured relational modules, which slits the building up in fixed lines. This takes advantage of the consecutive body of the structure. The sports hall in itself is simple, with a clear vision of the structure. It consists of the square volume that is slit up across the top.

Along the transverse trusses carrying the roof there will be shifting heights on the ceiling. By doing this a certain flow is created, giving the surface of the roof and ceiling its shape. The serrated roof will take advantage of its form to allow maximum sunlight to penetrate through the windows. This will allow a natural relation between sunlight, shape and construction principles in an elegant and simple way.

Where the roof is alternately lifted, it will create a corresponding opening in the facade along with the terrain. This opening draws sunlight into the sports hall and opens up towards the outdoor sports area and the courtyard. By doing this the sports hall gets its refined shape from clean, simple tweaks.

The new courtyard will be a place where people will cut across for getting around the area – inside or outside. The courtyard will embrace the existing public path going through the area, and through the buildings, into the new courtyard, through the sports hall and all the way out towards the outdoor sports area.

Landskabet

Landskab

Landscape
There will be a large lush vegetation in the courtyard. The place will be like a green oasis, where one can sit, relax and enjoy the life of the plants, as well as the sense of calm it emanates – like a cloister garden. There are both large sitting areas as well as sitting spots for individuals. This way the space provides a good environment for group work and for working alone.

The landscape of activities is manipulated, giving the area many opportunities for different types of activities. This surface is primarily made up of grass areas and some spots with hard surfaces. The landscape runs over a grass bank, which also invites for activities and a temporary stay. The new bank will be adapted and nuanced, so it will create a place for new activities, play and temporary stays around the sports hall.

The grass bank will be a landscape full of activities – sports and surprises. The bank will be upgraded from a barrier to an area that connects all the different areas and where people can stay and spend time together. This place is also intended to be used outside of opening times and not necessarily for organised activities.

This way the opportunities for using the multipurpose area is strengthened, creating a dynamic atmosphere, that can attract new people. Here you can come during a weekend and work out, play basketball, etc. or just relax in one of the many nooks. For educational purposes this area allows for different ways to teach and ultimately strengthening the subject and increase the opportunity for the students to develop.

Snit og opstalt

The bank and the outdoor sports area
To make room for the new sports hall, the grass bank will be pushed further towards the outdoor sports area towards the west. The bank will keep its orthogonal shape. This will work together with the existing nature and highlight the geometry of the building.

As many trees as possible will be preserved by replanting them either on the new bank or in the courtyard. The trees will be in a repetitive shape. Besides that the idea is

to preserve the qualities which makes this an even better area. In addition there will be smaller trees that will compliment the larger trees and the area by creating small spaces.

The outdoor sports area is a calm surface with football, basketball and running. There will be the same options for activities as before, but the layout will be different to make room for the building.

Planer

The sports hall
The sports hall is setup to accommodate many type of sports. Via the open facade, the sports hall has a strong relation to the outdoor sports area and the activities outside.

On the eastside of the sports hall, towards the courtyard, the two wings connecting the new and old buildings there is an outlook down into the sports hall. The wings function as social spaces which connects to the sports hall, the courtyard and the older building. Besides being able to have a view over the sports hall, the wings also have small niches for studying. Along with this, the wings also function as a connector between the ground level and 1st floor. This will naturally populate the

wings and make sure that the sports hall is in great connection to the other parts of the school. The sports hall is both simple and unique in its characteristics. By having a serrated roof, the sunlight is drawn into the sports hall, which makes the inside look markedly and impressive, as well as simple and straightforward. These features support the activities that will take place in the sports hall.

The four large ceiling windows and the doors towards the courtyard will draw the sunlight far into the sports hall. In accordance to the lighting calculation, the average light is 3.9%, which meaning that no access of lights is needed during the daytime.

Facadeudsnit
Facaden og landskabet
The facade
The sports hall is coated with large scaled anodized coated aluminum plates. This emphasizes the simplicity of the building and gives a great contrast to the existing brick building. While the buildings concise shape is a evolution of the old buildings shape. The aluminum facade makes a clear statement of the difference in the two. The aluminum facade makes a clear fascinating statement by reflecting

the life around it, the nature, the sky and the colours or the building in a faded way. Meanwhile the aluminum plates in them selves keeps the expression of the building precise and clear.
Where new meets old, the two types of facades meet and the brick surface will be reflected and a dialog between the two will appear.
