NÆSTVED BIOMASS PLANT

Naestved tile factory

The team’s approach to the assignment is based on the anatomy of the work and the site. By weaving the segments together, we create an interesting and varied buildingThe ‘Biomass Plant’ will be combined, externally with the topography, the view, the forest and the recreational potentials. Internally, the plant will combine different professions in a community space, where the direct connection between employees and the individual functions are connected in a cohesive tile and architectural structure.

NÆSTVED BIOMASS PLANT IN THE CITY
The proposal suggests a combination of flexible and functional parameters in a new holistic architectural concept. One idea which creates space where employees and visitors, and residents can meet in a new way, while the goal is telling a story about the city’s new biomass plant, based on an understanding of Næstved’s industrial history.

The defining framework for the building structure can be added to over time and can function optimally to maximize contact between city, water and views. In this way, the proposal strives to create a connection between the scale of the tile factory and the other buildings on the site, in a more human scale. Between the biomass plant’s functional and clear symbolic value there is an urban invitation for contact between the water and the administration building.

NEW GREEN PROFILE
Fifty percent of the homes in Næstved are part of the regional heating system. Building the ‘Biomass Plant’ was a part of the municipal plan to use a more CO2– friendly heat source. With its placement south of the Maglemølle business park, this power station is a natural part of urban development and has a visual link to the city’s industrial history, nature and green space running along the Laguna path south of the New Maglemølle.

The ‘Biomass Plant’ can be a part of Næstved’s new green profile and along with the heat plant, can create a connection between production and user. Using education, recreation and openness as a part of the plan, the nature area south of the New Maglemølle will continue to be a part of a running and walking route along the Sus canal, thereby adding educational experiences.

EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE
The site is visually affected by its proximity to the old industrial area, the Sus canal has separated the city with the allotment gardens and the public housing. At the same time the area has been left alone too long. The area around the new ‘Biomass Plant’, despite its placement and contextual character, have the potential to become a shining example of technical buildings of the future and how they can combine old and new, functionality and history.

The green heat source,  is not just about production, but also about producing knowledge. Between the primary programs and the functions, we create an inner, encapsulating knowledge landscape, that relays information and recreates history about the fascinating processes from wood to heat and from welfare to knowledge society. The facade of the administration building turns towards the stream and the city. The facade is the main activating factor that can tell the story of the functions and goals it serves in the context of the city.

STORYTELLING PATH
The space between the buildings will be woven together with recreational paths and by the future developments of Maglemøllen. In this way, the ‘Biomass Plant’ can tell the story of future sustainable strategies and knowledge about consumerism and energy usage. We suggest a path through the landscape that connects the factory to the surrounding nature areas. The path will be marked by characteristic materials such as tiles, asphalt, white gravel and other materials that relate to the site and guide visitors around the area and into the building. The public path system will be pulled down to the water. The terrain creates a natural amphitheater potential on the water’s edge. The path is connected to the kettle building which can be used to display the activities going on within the building. The ash from the furnaces can be used for fertilizer in the gardens on the western side of the building. The building plots will be used to cultivate willow for burning until they are built upon. A good communicative relationship with the municipality, cultural life of the city and grassroots organizations can be used in a dynamic collaboration to integrate the place and to create new activities in the area.

KEEP IT SIMPLE
Instead of building a monofunctional masterpiece or something totally modern,  we choose to  design something based on common sense. A building without extra technological extravagances. The building’s carbon neutrality can create the potential for synergy and spontaneous interactions inside the building. We believe that common sense and the right combination of technically simple solutions and secure our goal for a poetic, powerful, and human building. A rational foundation where functionality, flexibility, and community, are the driving factors for the architectonic expression.

We recommend that the pragmatic sensibility should be the controlling element, but that new materials, functions, and uses will be added to create a new type of connection to its local surroundings. The team is convinced that we can go further with common sense and the right combination of simple technologies and economic elements in the architectonic expression. Though it seems like a banal premise, but we suggest the opposite of classic modernism, where the technical details are designed into the overall structure, and instead a new paradigm where you do not need to compromise between flexibility, function, and architecture, in order to reach a balance in the architectural expression that is customized to the functions and needs of the users.

HYBRID BUILDINGS
The project is based on a reading of the disposition of the industrial context, with its crane tracks and natural orientation towards the water. The new building structure will be oriented north-south to create the best connection with the Sus canal. Placing the functions based principles of logistics, maximizing community spaces, sunlight in the workshops and offices, and optimizing facades create a new form for the hybrid building.

The structure of the open spaces are flexible and allow changes in the number of floors and their placement. The individual volumes are monolithic buildings and are landmarks for the area. The scale and the form are based on the relationship in the existing buildings and are integrated into the new structure of the area. The traditional gables and industrial facades are reinterpreted and bridge traditional style and to the visionary. We thereby balance rational and informal architecture, with timeless, place based, and upgradable renovations for coming decades. This is a quality that represents timeless architecture.
