MÅLØV CIRCLE

Den nye broforbindelse

With our winning proposal Måløv Circle we have drawn a clear strategy for how to approach the continuous development of the town and strengthen it in a time where demography, technology, climate changes and communities are a natural part of the tale of Måløv. Måløv has with its long developing history shown just how resilient and viable the town is. People here are thriving alongside each other and secure the collective town. With Måløv Circle the story of Måløv continuous!

“Maaløv has its name from how the water runs, in Danish ‘løb’. Nowadays it is called ‘løb’, but in older days they may have called it “løv.” The town may also have gotten its name from where the town has grown the strongest trees on its fields, marker in Danish, and during the winters the fallen leaves, called løv, has been carried by the wind to that target, maal, where the town now lies.” – From a historical tale of how the suburb of Maaløv was founded, from old recordings of 1915.

Helhedsplan

A MODERN SUBURB
The DNA of Måløv can be characterized as being a ‘modern suburb’. Måløv has a clear historical self-understanding, a strong and organized unity as well as a close connection to nature and the recreational opportunities it provides. These conditions have been a piling point to our approach to the task. We have made a clear strategy for the many ambitions and dreams, along with working on how to strengthen the community in a time where is becomes more clear how our everyday lives have an impact on the global

challenges that requires new thinking and transitions. Our first actions will be clear. Through the uniqueness of the suburb and the organized inner areas of the suburb, we suggest making a continuous circle through Måløv and create common fields of thought in the suburb where roads and paths cross. We want to create a new central connection that improves the community, brings together the new and old, and brings together the suburbs many local initiatives to a collective initiative.

Workshop på Kulturtorvet

DOT FOR DOT
Måløv Circle is a positive and resilient approach to developing the town. Every child knows the game where you have to connect random dots that makes up a picture or a new order of some sort in the end. We have done the same for the many exciting meeting points and activities around Måløv. By suggesting new meeting points, connections and functions we thereby rearrange the dots around Måløv and create an entire new picture.

The tradition of connecting or forming a circle of something that is special is as old as time itself. In Måløv’s case the circle is used as an open and inviting circle

including and gathering the strongest grass roots and meeting ponts in one collective motive. If all 8.861 citizens helped connect the suburb they would, shoulder by shoulder, frame its center, and this way the size of the circle is defined.

The circle will both create a connected story about the town’s collective activities, its urban circuit and specifically make up the clear cut paths around the town. Here different generations meet up and the paths connect the attractive recreative nature places around Måløv. Our first action will thereby be very down to earth and includes ways which can add focal points in many existing and new connections.

VISION
Måløv Circle is the invitation to a new collective mindset that has its root in the younger generations hope for the future. We all have to try to relate to the understanding of the globes current condition as well as the creation of the town, the life in it and what the town is made of. In a short amount of time there has been created both a complete unseen prosperity and resulted in a new and horrific climate reality.

In Tor Nørretrander og Søren Hermansen’s book “Community”, from 2011, it describes how the community’s connection to a place and the socialization gradually vanishes in the modern society and larger cities. The eyeheight in towns has disappeared. This means that the decisions have moved further away from them, decisions that actually matters. But not in Måløv.

Here there is a close connection amongst the people and a municipality that listens to suggestions trying to accommodate the wishes from the citizens in the best way possible.

In olden days the commons was a grassland where everybody could send their animals out to grass. In Måløv Circle the idea is to reestablish the Common as the modern town’s common area that everyone has ownership and access to. A town where we are invited to experiment and express ourselves is the most sustainable town. The place where the everyday life is unique is the place where people tend to stay. A place that is connected to the nature, town and each other is exactly where there is potential for something new and useful to create something new.

MÅLØV CIRCLE
The development of the future Måløv takes place in its history and specific identity. Just as ealier Måløv is surrounded by the great landscape, but it is missing a clear well defined town center. The railroad tracks and Frederikssundvejen is important for the existence of Måløv. Thought at the same time they both appear as barriers that divides the town. This is why we introduce Måløv Circle, a methodology for the development of the town that is flexible because it can be physically manifested in larger as well as smaller areas depending on the citizens demands and needs. Måløv Circle partially embraces the town’s most important

present qualities and partially builds on to the existing with new attractions. This way the town can be connected better. In the development of Måløv Circle the citizens are involved due to the fact that they will have a say in how to approach the new urban spaces. Just like in the historical suburb, the community and connection to nature will be a support to Måløv’s future development as a modern suburb. With new meeting spots and multifunctional spaces informal places to meet are created across generations and segments, and a feeling of a strong collective town with a strong suburb culture is renewed.

Workshop på Kulturtorvet

BETWEEN CITY AND COUNTRY
To support Måløv’s identity as a modern suburb, it is important not to let the town spread out too much past the existing borders. This can end up in merging with other existing towns and reduce the experience of nature and open landscape. This means that it is important to densify the areas the closer you get to the center and strengthen the town center. The city development of Måløv has to be approached in such a way that that it still is desirable to live in a sustainable city.

The surrounding areas has to be made into an even more valuable for Måløv through partially physical approaches such as good path, small recreative facilities, and meeting spots and partially an increased conscious about the surrounding opportunities that can be used for arrangements and information. Especially the nature area around Hareskoven, the forest, has an enormous recreational value. Therefore it is especially important to make great connections out to these areas.

THE CULTURE SQUARE AND SPORTS AREA
As a natural extension of the ambitions around the Måløv Aksen, which focused on the railroads barrier effect and connection to the Søndergårds areas, we suggest creating a new cultural square by Måløv’s culture center and its new extension. The square will be a place to meet up and focus on each other and the community. The new square will join culture and shopping in a new outgoing identity, and join the north-south flow in Måløv together with Måløv Hovedgade, the main street. Hereby the square adds a great place to Måløv, which the parking lot that is there now does not seem to do. A fundamental quality that Måløv provides to the citizens is the active associations and central sport functions in the sports park. Furthermore there will be all the generous nature experiences around the town. By carrying this idea into practice it will combine sport

and nature by opening Måløv creek as a blue link. In olden days the pond was an important area for the common space. By opening up the creek the same exposure is created with its winding’s and bulges by the sports park. Thereby a new blue axis is created in the community of Måløv.

The open creek will help the town against climate changes and with its visible and natural look it will upgrade the area and be an integration of the school, sports halls and sports park – together they will make up a nature axis for the northern path of Måløv Circle. Along the creek, from the nature park and the church past the school to the sports halls, a southern oriented climate landscape is created connecting the areas together.

Ny bro

A NEW CONNECTING BRIDGE
With the expansion of the Søndergårds area, Måløv’s urban cohesive aspect is challenged. The western part of the new area is placed far from Måløv Aksen, which forces people east along Smørum Parkvej in the periphery of the town. A connection that is not attractive for people on foot or by bike.

Therefore we suggest a new pedestrian- and bike connection crossing the railroad from Søndergårds Allé to the industrial area. The team has estimated that a bridge connection is the easiest approach and will strategically also be a more attractive attribute in comparison to Måløv Aksen’s hidden urban space. The bridge raises you up and gives a great view along the tracks

as well as see the older and newer parts of the town. The bridge connection brings a much needed “soft” mobility and life to the town center around Måløv Byvej and expands the connection to the rest of Måløv drastically. The idea is that the bridge over time will have a catalytic effect in such a way that the new urban flow will have an effect of the consumer possibilities and ultimately the development of the area. In itself the bridge will be a piling point in eye height that adds a natural and human touch to the town center. It will now be attractive to promenade and bike through the area. This is also seen as a great quality in comparison to getting more people to use the bike, take the train and all in all promote greener mobility.
