HVIDOVRE HOSPITAL

Hvidovre Hospital Front

In this project the team aims to improve the connection between the sensory, natural, the functional, and the technological to vitalize the surroundings that will have healing properties. The proposal put the whole person in focus by looking at the mental, physical, and existential values we all rely on.

FUNCTIONAL SENSORY
The Team wants to radicalize the connection between functional and sensory at Hvidovre Hospital, by integrating the senses into the functional structures. Sometimes the sensory and the functional are experienced at the same time in the hospital as it stands today, the team wishes to weave natures sensory experiences and elements together into the technological, hospital structure. We will do this by reintroducing the ideas Morten Klint had for the hospital, in relation to the landscape. By reusing fundamental properties of the pavilion hospital and the positive correlation between nature and human health- a rehabilitation landscape. This connection has now been proved by several studies.

THE PERFORMATIVE AESTHETIC OF NATURE
Nature is often presented as one of two things: either as a scientific categorization of a series of processes, connections, and ecosystems. Or as a romantic, aesthetic, beautiful, mystical, and enticing.  With these two interpretations of nature, its functionality and aesthetic qualities are divorced of one another. The chestnut tree is an example of something that is filled with ritual aesthetic, while at the same time absorbs CO2, infiltrates stormwater, and provides shelter from the elements. The team would like to resist this method of over simplification of difference between function and aesthetics, and create a cohesive interpretation of nature that includes nature’ performative aesthetics.

WELCOME TO HVIDOVRE HOSPITAL!
In the future Hvidovre Hospital we would like to create a connection between the city and the green roof around the main hallway. The roof will be folded over and meet the staff, users, visitors, and neighbors in a welcoming manner, which matches the hospital’s overall form. The vision is to establish a natural, welcoming, entrance, no matter how you arrive, whether it be by car, bus, taxi, on foot, or by bicycle. We will optimize the entrance in accordance with the newest science and it will support the experiences of the people working in the hospital. In the large scale of the masterplan, the entrance will be the keystone to the city and the hospital, and in a larger scale support the hospital’s connection to the world around it.

MATRIX
The hospital changes from base to building. The landscape is usually associated with a curly architectural language, which meets the highly functional, space optimizing areas when it meets the building. There is always something new to look at. A tree growing leaves, water running across a surface, or an acquaintance to bump into. The terrain changes constantly, and one must use their bodies in a different way than inside a building. The landscape is integrated with the health perspective and is experienced as a continuous spatial matrix. The user develops an understanding and the topographic elements invite the user into a sensory experience, education, and play.

PAVILION HOSPITAL AND INSPIRATION
The original ambition about creating the best possible human experience for patients at Hvidovre Hospital was to make the ‘pavillion hospital’ the inspiration for the structure. The pavillion hospital arose from the different types of gardens and parks, while also bringing light and air into the wards. The smaller pavilions made it possible for patients to rest in beautiful, natural surroundings, the most important treatment of the time. Natures sensory qualities were already playing a primary role in treatment of the ill in 1900. These qualities were slowly forgotten, but today they are becoming more used. Morten Klint created the original, irregular, dynamic and lush roof gardens placed at the base of the hospital, so that the building would be in balance with nature. The roof gardens were placed in relation to the wards

and created green outdoor areas where patients, staff, and visitors could enjoy the invigorating qualities of nature. Based on the same ideas, Klint also created the concept of a noise wall to shield from the noise of the newly built highway as a 600 meter long snake of red
Spiraea ‘Arguta’, curving in irregular forms. The dynamic and eye catching element would break the large, open landscape surfaces, create contrast to the monotonous curves and rather create a surprising varied landscape. In this type of thinking, the landscape finds its language and reason. By incorporating nature into the hospital’s physical surroundings, nature will support the patient’s health and create calming environments for the visitors.
