CLIMATE TILE

Snit i gadeplan

TREDJE NATUR’s Climate Tile want to teach the world how to walk on water. In the cities adaption process and escalating density we need to rethink the individual elements, so we can offer hybrid solutions everywhere in the cities. We have developed an innovative climate tile for the future cities sidewalks and urban spaces. The climate tile will be able to handle the climate changes whilst creating new adventures in the city.

Collaborators: ACO Nordic, IBF, Teknologisk Institut, Kollision, Orbicon and Københavns Kommune
Foundation support: Realdania 2014-16 and

Period: 2014 -2018
Type: Innovation project
Status: Under development

“The climate changes is both a gift and a wake-up call from above. The nature is suddenly more visible and are in these years mobilizing an understanding of that we with our settlement, way of life and consumptions of resources have triggered far-reaching and irrevocable changes for our surroundings. In a positive way, this momentum should be used to create humane, eventful and thereby sustainable cities.” – Flemming Rafn Thomsen, partner, TREDJE NATUR

The climate tile is at the head of a new type of innovative climate solutions for dense cities. The solution utilize the climate changes positively and as a source in the development of the cities as more robust, eventful and sustainable.

In spring 2014 a three year long product development course was started with funds from the campaign “Klimaspring” under Realdania. The total project frame was at 8 million Danish kroner.

The project has been awarded 1,1 million Danish kroner. in co-financing from “Markedsmodningsfonden” to further development. The funds will support the fabrication and construction of a test sidewalk with the climate tile – in collaboration with Copenhagen municipality. The sidewalk with the tile will test the Climate tile in proportion to function, design and performance. The new test sidewalk will be located at Heimdalsgade number 22-24 at Nørrebro in Copenhagen and was chosen in close cooperation with Copenhagen municipality.

Café Heimdalsgade
Klimaflisen planudsnit

”We are thrilled to receive funds from Markedmodningsfonden that will make it possible to test the climate tile on a spot where all the city’s operators are represented. It gives so many fantastic inputs to the project – both technically and to the experiences. We have chosen Heimdalsgade, since it is close to our own office. Today the street is experiences as a sad parking street where the Café on the corner is the only consolation. The café has shown great initiative to use the sidewalk outside the café with for example an outdoor living room and vegetable markets. We expect that we together with their passion for entrepreneurship and the Climate tiles system and urban nature can create an attractive space in one of Nørrebros gray streets. We wish to show the world that climate proofing isn’t just hidden technology, but also a chance for everybody to participate in the improvement of our everyday spaces where we understand the city’s hidden connections and offer greater life quality. – Jeppe Ecklon, Project Manager, TREDJE NATUR

“We are so happy that the test sidewalk for the climate tile is going to be built on our street. We have previously played with the thought of the possibility for a more active green outdoor space in front of the café. We think a new active street scape and more room for breaks and events – for example farmers markets with herbal gardens in the sidewalk or record sales under open sky and green trees – is a great idea. It’s cool – more of that in the rest of the city!” – Kim Tach, Co-owner of the Cafe Heimdalsgade 22

Planudsnit Klimaflisen

700 kilometre more value to the city
The sidewalks in Copenhagen form more than 700 kilometre and thereby several million square meters. All cities have sidewalks – even the smallest and most dense. The potential in Denmark and on an international basis is comprehensive. As an example, there are 20.000 kilometre of sidewalks in New York City, where the management of water and development of the city is a political priority. The many sidewalk kilometres have a great potential. A potential to create rainwater management and to bring more value to the city.

The last year’s comprehensive reorganization of the district heating supply network have broad long term unearthing with great inconvenience where the citizens can’t see and won’t get any functionally in return. The climate tile will be placed in the same working procedure as pipe replacement or/and restoration. This way, the climate tile will not bring extra roadwork. An expansion of the dense cities sidewalks will at the same time be possible – in order to create more room for climate adaption and urban life.

Aksonometri
Water Network
The climate tile reintroduces the natural water circuit in the existing cities. By collecting rainwater from roofs and sidewalks, we can make the water a resource while the risk for damages coursed by the rain are reduced. We use the water in the best possible way as a positive supplement to the city’s drainage system. Doing this, the flow of water to the existing sewers reduces significant and are thereby creating savings on for example new facilities and expansions of the existing water management in the cities.

The water is directed primarily to the surrounding plant holes where the plants will get nutrition from the water. The water will later on evaporate the water from the crown. This means that a substantial part of the

water is consumed while the remaining part of the water seeps through the soil under the plants. The natural water circuit is redressed in the city by this simple process. The climate tile manages the rainwater from the roof and sidewalks. The water from the sidewalks is led through holes in the tiles where the water is transported to a fascine unite by integrated pipes. The fascine unite can manage the water in connection to storage, delay, diversion and percolation.

The water from the roof is led directly from the roof to the fascine unit, in order to make sure, that the water can percolate in the winter periods where the sidewalks gets salted. The water with a high content of salt are transferred directly to the sewers in the salting period.

Technical

Plug & Play
The climate tile is constructed with vertical and horizontal pipes that allows the tile to add functions of different sorts and thereby it is possible to adjust the tile to any given situation or activity on the sidewalk.

The Plug function is able to manage the water from the surface and down under and are shaped as a plug that can be added vertically in the tile. The vertical plugs makes it possible to maintain, update and change the tiles functions over lifetime of 50 years. This way it can

always be prepared for new urban or climate conditions and the tile is assured for the future. The goal is to create an intelligent tile with low-tech and high-tech plugs-ins. The plugs will for example be able to read and send information about the present water level to either the water supply or citizens. This way we get more informed and aware about the climate changes and the climate adaption. The Plug function can also be used for installation of for example furniture, signs, lights and plant boxes in the city.
