ALMEGÅRD BARRACKS

Our winning proposal for the development of Almegård Barracks is based on a holistic, local concept where the main transformative force is found in the individual users and inherent qualities of the site. The danish barracks will be transformed into an exhibition for innovative sustainable solutions and climate adaptation that is based on the barrack’s role in society and competences- learning and personal development.

Project period:
 2013 –
Responsibility: Masterplan and landscape
Type: The winner of both two phases of the competition.
Status: Under realization

From the judges in the first phase:
This is the only proposal which presents a working method that can be used in relation to energy efficiency renovation in all of the barracks across Denmark and other large, complex buildings, such as university campuses and production facilities.

The masterplan has a significant landscape concept, which creates green, blue and social spine and thereby ties the area together and adds landscape and social functions to the individual buildings, while it also collects rainwater. The greenway winds through the site in an organic fashion, creating a recognizable, binding element.

The simplicity of the proposal manages to add new and interesting activity areas and meeting spaces in the local areas, and in connection to the main space around building 32, which is seen in the ‘Square’ and the ‘Trench’. The thoroughness of the initiatives lends to a great amount of co design and citizen involvement.

The foundation of the proposal is an understanding of the identity of Almegård Barracks, and we aim to create a space where future functions and the existing qualities can be merged, while achieving a quality, down to earth daily and work life for the residents. The proposal is about creating a flexible, multifunctional and holistic architectonic concept. Here the users and functions meet one another in a new way, around innovation and climate adaptation. We believe that a lot can be achieved with common sense and the right combination of simple, proven technological solutions
Thus a rational starting point in which function, technology and economy are controlling elements in the architectural expression. Though it might be thought of as a banal component this however contradicts classic modernism where there is taken an approach to integrate all technical details in an architectural holistic solution. We want to offer a new paradigm where there no need for any compromise between building and biology to achieve some optimal barracks, also in an architectural balance. The approach for our proposal is therefore focusing on the existing terrain and the understanding of the locations identity and spirit.

The appearance of the buildings is based on a rational foundation where function, technology and economics are the guiding elements. Some sustainable features will include: energy-saving windows, low-flow faucets, time-regulated shower heads, rainwater collection, intelligent lighting and energy regulation and LED lightning, active and passive solar energy, insulation, maintenance-free and recyclable building materials. The installation will be in horizontal, insulated shafts that allow for flexibility in future adjustments. The renovation will create a drastic change in the indoor climate, the experience of daylight and the quality of the homes, which will also create the need for a careful redesign
of the buildings facadesThe reinvention of the facade is discreet and refined. The paned windows are preserved, but with an added layer of glass. The wooden siding is kept as the main material for the facades, but is changed in its directional alignment and dimensioning. There are a few new openings added on the courtyard side of the buildings, and the parapet is lowered to sitting-height. There will be wooden shutters on the windows, that will become an integrated part of the facade. When the shutters are open they are perfectly placed to give the right amount of shade, while beautifully filtering the sunlight.

Based on the program’s assessment tool, we have created a new tool. This tool is a catalog which establishes a community platform, made of a simple system to make it easy to identify, assess and prioritize which sustainable solutions to utilize. This “Plug and Play” catalog can not only be used at Almegårds Barracks, but all of FBE’s properties.
These ‘game board’ like interventions, can be selected based on the project, and are dependent on the site, requirements, financial situation, and strategy. By using this tool, you can create a masterplan for the specific project based on its goals, strategy and economic status.
