Press release 19. november 2015
Copenhagen and the Climate Neighborhood has been selected to be a part of a the ‘Cities100’ publication, which has been made public today, Thursday November 19. The ‘Cities100’ publication, developed by Sustainia in collaboration with C40, a network of the world’s largest cities that are taking action against climate change, along with the philanthropic organization, Realdania. This publication contains 100 concrete examples of urban solutions against climate change, that can be scaled in the whole world. The Climate Neighborhood in Østerbro is an example of these solutions out of 216 proposals from 94 cities.

“The transformation of the Climate Neighborhood in Østerbro adds to the physical upgrade of the area and creates a new identity for the neighborhood. We often have guests from major cities all over the world who are looking for inspiration from the solutions implemented at Tåsinge Square. When I signed a collaboration agreement with New York City regarding stormwater management, the Climate Neighborhood was emphasized as a solution that they are inspired by.” -Morten Kabell (EL), Copenhagen Municipality Technical and Environmental Mayor

Bryggervangen

The vision of Bryggervangen.

The Climate Neighborhood Østerbro provides an innovative model for climate adaptation that can provide inspiration for cities all over the world. The municipality has worked with local residents to find the solutions for stormwater management that also contribute to the quality of life in the neighborhood. TREDJE NATUR developed the overall vision plan (in Danish) that concentrated on rethinking and optimizing urban spaces, so that there is space to manage the increasing amounts of rainwater Copenhagen receives each year.
The Vision for the Climate Neighborhood is based on participation of local residents. Today, green roofs, rain gardens, and street trees are popping up by initiatives by individuals living in the area, along with municipal construction projects. ØsterGro, a popular rooftop garden, has also contributed to the fundamental identity of a formerly worn out area in Copenhagen. Due these efforts, this neighborhood can call itself ‘Denmark’s First Climate Neighborhood’.

“The Climate Neighborhood is the first concrete example of how a dense city can adapt to take on the looming climate changes. Our strategy shows how cities, via stormwater management investments, can create urban environments where the fantastic qualities of nature will become a visible part of everyday life. We delivered our competition proposal shortly after the cloudburst in 2011, and many of the values and strategies we use in our firm are based on the Climate Neighborhood project. We are therefore pleased to be a part of the publication because its goal is to inspire the global community and wish the Copenhagen Municipality, the Climate Neighborhood Østerbro and the residents of the neighborhood congratulations on this recognition.” -Flemming Rafn Thomsen, partner at Tredje Natur.

Vision of Tåsinge Square.

The 100 solutions point to the fact that meaningful change has come from outside the national political sphere. Municipalities and cities are smaller and more agile than their colleagues working at a national scale. They are directly responsible for their local constituents and more invested in the places they serve. Despite wealth or resources, size or location, cities around the world are looking to each other for example of best practices to adapt their local areas and demonstrate that they have the power to act by building a smart, resilient and resource effective world.

Cities100 will also be presented at the Sustainia COP21 event on December 6, 2015 in Paris. By identifying these 100 accessible solutions for cities, the Cities 100 partners wish to emphasize the potential to transform cities during the climate negotiations taking place in Paris, from November 30 to December 11, 2015 at COP21. The partners behind ‘Cities100’ are C40, Realdania, and Sustainia.
